Electronic devices and web 2.0 tools: usage trends in engineering students
    (Tempus Publication, 2017-03-31) Humanante Ramos, P. R.; García-Peñalvo, Francisco J.; Conde-González, M. Á.
Personal Learning Environments or PLE are student centred spaces, which take into account theirs needs, learning styles and preferences. These spaces appear as important alternatives to overcome the shortcomings encountered with the use of institutional platforms. On the other hand, there is widespread use of mobile electronic devices and Web 2.0 tools among university students, mainly for communication and leisure activities, but that could be used for educational purposes. This research aims to make a diagnosis on access to and use of electronic devices and the web tools by students of the degree of Systems Engineering and Computer Science at Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Chimborazo in Ecuador, from the viewpoint of PLE. A methodological level corresponds to a quantitative and non-experimental research, ex-post-facto. The results show certain trends in the types of devices and their frequency of use, as well as their preferences for the tools to obtain and to find information, not only to create but to edit content and communicate with others, where they prioritize the use of certain social networks and some tools of synchronous and asynchronous communication. One of the main conclusions of this study mentions the huge potential currently offered by Web 2.0 tools to structure the PLE of college students, as well as the great potential for integration with mobile device.

Mobile personal learning environments: conceptualization and structure
    (2015-10) Humanante Ramos, P. R.; García-Peñalvo, Francisco J.; Conde-González, M. Á.
The popularization and massive use of Web 2.0 tools by students changes the how their academic activities are carried out and therefore also influence the way in which students learn. This has led to many researchers and scholars to study the Personal Learning Environments. On the other hand, most of people have a mobile electronic device (smartphones and tablets) and its use in education evidence some positive results. These two technological trends in our educational contexts allow us to study what is known as Mobile Personal Learning Environments (mPLE). This article conceptualizes the mPLE concept and proposes a structure for further design and implementation in higher education through the use of Web 2.0 tools.

TRAILER project overview: Tagging, recognition and acknowledgment of informal learning experiences
(2013-01-15) García-Peñalvo, Francisco J.; Zangrando, Valentina; García-Holgado, Alicia; Conde-González, M. Á.; Seoane Pardo, Antonio M.; Alier Forment, Marc; Janssen, Jose; Griffiths, Dai; Mykowska, Aleksandra; Alves, Gustavo R.; Minovic, Miroslav
The evolution of new technology and its increasing use, have for some years been making the existence of informal learning more and more transparent, especially among young and older adults in both Higher Education and workplace contexts. However, the nature of formal and non-formal, course-based, approaches to learning has made it hard to accommodate these informal processes satisfactorily, and although technology bring us near to the solution, it has not yet achieved. TRAILER project aims to address this problem by developing a tool for the management of competences and skills acquired through informal learning experiences, both from the perspective of the user and the institution or company. This paper describes the research and development main lines of this project.
